✍️ Three Things That Made Me Smile This Week
Sometimes, happiness isn’t found in big milestones or epic moments—it’s tucked inside the small, unexpected corners of the day. Life tends to race by, pulling us from one task to another, often without pause. But every now and then, something tiny and random happens, and it just makes you smile. No effort, no expectations, just pure joy.
This week, I made it a point to slow down a little and pay attention. And in doing so, I stumbled upon a few of those smile-worthy gems. Here are three of them, and maybe—just maybe—they’ll make you smile too.
1. A Stranger’s Dog in Sunglasses
It was a random Tuesday, and I was waiting in line at my favorite coffee shop, mentally juggling the to-do list for the day ahead. My brain was already three steps into the future—emails, errands, groceries, meetings. You know the drill. Then I glanced outside and boom—serotonin in dog form.
There he was: a golden retriever sitting perfectly still, looking like a furry fashion icon straight out of a doggy Vogue shoot. He was wearing tiny sunglasses. Not just any shades—legit, black-lensed, reflective Ray-Ban-style sunglasses, complete with a little head strap to keep them in place. His fur blew slightly in the breeze like he knew he was the star of the sidewalk. Calm. Cool. Collected.
People were stopping to take pictures. One guy tried to fist-bump him. A little kid pointed and squealed, “Mom, he looks like a rock star!” And honestly? He did.
I couldn’t stop smiling. For a good five minutes, I forgot about emails and errands. I just stood there sipping my latte, watching this very good boy soak in his fifteen minutes of fame. The best part? His human came out, gave him a high-five, and they walked off like it was just another day of strutting through life.
That moment reminded me how pure joy can be. How it shows up unannounced, in the most random places—like a golden retriever in Ray-Bans.
2. A Perfectly Ripe Avocado
Okay, hear me out—this one might seem ridiculous, but if you’ve ever bought an avocado, you’ll get it.
You pick one up at the store. It’s hard as a rock. You wait a few days. You check it, it’s still not ready. Then—somehow overnight—it goes from “not yet” to “oops, too late.” The avocado window is ruthless.
But this week, I found one. The one. A perfectly ripe avocado.
I was making breakfast—nothing fancy, just toast and eggs. I opened the avocado, already bracing myself for disappointment. But then… that flawless green. No brown spots. No mush. Just creamy, ripe perfection. It spread like butter, looked like it belonged in a brunch ad, and tasted even better.
And here’s the thing: it wasn’t just about the avocado. It was about the feeling it gave me. A sense of alignment. Like something—however small—had gone right. In a world full of unexpected curveballs and daily chaos, that one perfect avocado felt like a cosmic pat on the back.
Small win? Definitely. But sometimes small wins carry big joy. It made me smile through the rest of the day.
3. An Old Song on the Radio
I was driving home later that evening, tired but content. The sun was setting, casting everything in that soft golden glow that makes even the most mundane street look magical. I flipped on the radio and started scanning stations, not really looking for anything in particular. And then it happened.
That song.
You know the one. The song that instantly grabs you by the memory and pulls you back to another version of yourself. This one took me straight back to high school—driving with friends, windows down, shouting lyrics like our lives depended on it. I hadn’t heard it in years, but every word came back to me like no time had passed at all.
There’s something deeply emotional about those songs. They’re time machines in disguise. They don’t just remind you of the melody—they take you back to the smell of the air, the people you were with, the feelings you had. And in that moment, with the chorus blasting and the breeze in my face, I felt 17 again.
I laughed, turned up the volume, and sang like no one could hear me. And honestly, even if they could—I didn’t care. It felt so good to let go.
Sometimes, the best smiles come from the past—uninvited, unplanned, but deeply welcome.
Finding Joy in the Ordinary
So that was my week. A dog in shades, a beautiful avocado, and a throwback tune that hit me right in the nostalgia.
None of these were major events. I didn’t win an award or land a new job or go on a life-changing trip. But still, these three moments made me pause and feel good. And that’s what life is really about, isn’t it?
We spend so much time waiting for the big stuff—vacations, promotions, weddings, breakthroughs—that we sometimes forget the tiny treasures hidden in the everyday.
Joy doesn’t have to be dramatic. It can be gentle. It can be quiet. It can come from a dog’s sunglasses, a piece of fruit, or a memory you thought you’d forgotten.
A Little Challenge for You
So now I want to pass the smile along to you. What made you smile this week?
Take a moment. Think about it. Write it down. Share it with a friend. Or just hold it close and remember: even on the most ordinary days, life is still full of magic.
And if nothing comes to mind, maybe today’s the day to slow down and look for one. Maybe it’s waiting for you on a sidewalk, in a song, or on your plate.
Either way—don’t miss it. The little things? They matter more than we think.
